Man Tries To Create Lie-Flat Seat In United Airlines Economy Class…
A man became agitated onboard a United Airlines Airbus A320, attacking his seat in what appears to be an effort to create a lie-flat bed in economy class…
Odd: Man Attacks His Own Economy Class Seat On United Airlines
Yes, the slimline seats in United economy class on the A320 are not all that comfortable. In fact, your bum is going to hurt on any flight much longer than 90 minutes. Even so, trying to rectify the situation by creating more space for yourself is really an odd move.
The video below was purportedly filmed on a recent United flight from Austin (AUS) to Los Angeles (LAX). A passenger onboard suddenly went wild, violently kicking his own seat in an attempt to (perhaps?) make it recline more? I’ve flown in those seats many times and the recline is very limited and this man apparently thought he could create a lie-flat bed in economy class and succeeded in kicking the seat over, almost like the old Russian jetliners in which every seat would fold flat?
But that destruction of airline property is not looked kindly upon: those seats are not meant to collapse.
As you can see in the final seconds of the video below, he needed up being tied up…the flight did not divert, but he was arrested upon arrival in Los Angeles.

I tend to think he was just intoxicated and the kind of drunk that gets very angry very easily when inebriated. Maybe it was alcohol, maybe it was drugs, but whatever it was, I didn’t blame the flight attendants for initially standing back and watching…the guy seemed so fixated on destroying that seat that he likely was a danger to anyone who tried to stop him at that moment.
It isn’t clear how he was stopped at all and ended up tied up, but it does appear he ultimately calmed down.
Note to self: if you want a lie-flat seat, fly in business class.
