Switzerland Unveils The Most Beautiful Passport In The World
Switzerland is transforming its iconic red passport, with a new design that blends security with artistry to create what I’d consider the most beautiful (and technically advanced) passport in the world.
Beautiful New Swiss Passport Is Interactive
The iconic red Swiss passport is very recognizable but has not changed in years. In an age of counterfeit, Switzerland wanted to create a more secure passport. RETINAA, a Geneva-based studio, was given the task of updating the passport for the Swiss Federal Office of Police in a manner that promoted “Swissness” while increasing security.
I’d say the final result is a stunning success…
The cover is still red, but alpine peaks and valleys are now woven ornately on the cover.
RETINAA has meticulously utilized 3D-modeled reliefs coupled with custom typefaces. Every page feels like a living map, offering Switzerland’s 26 cantons in ink and stamps. The negative spaces are filled with geometric patterns and abstract technicolor watermarks
The coolest part of the passport is the UV-sensitive elements inspired by the country’s landscapes.
“Physical security meets digital security. The Swiss passport datapage contains the holder’s biometrics and thus requires the highest level of security. It was one of the most challenging components to design due to the sheer number of technologies and technical requirements. Under UV light, a network of isolines physically and symbolically safeguards the holder’s data.”
CONCLUSION
I may not love the process of procuring visas, but I love physical passports as a vestige of the past and my prior passport books are some of my most prized possessions.
The new US passports are not bad in terms of design, especially on the ID page, but the new Swiss designs takes passports to a whole different level.
