Unsolved Mystery: American Airlines 777 Diverts Over Inexplicable Banging Noises In Cargo Hold
Halloween, American Airlines style: a 777-300ER diverted to Buenos Aires after both passengers and crew heard “strange” banging sounds coming from the cargo hold while in the air. But after federal police stormed the cargo hold in Buenos Aires, nothing was found…
The Eerie Halloween Flight To Nowhere On American Airlines: Unexplainable Banging Noises In Cargo Hold In-Flight Prompts Emergency Landing
AA954 was traveling from Buenos Aires (EZE) to New York (JFK) on All Hallows’ Eve, October 31, 2024. The flight was operated by a Boeing 777-300ER (registration code N9717AN).
Imagine this. You’ve settled into your seat. You’re watching a movie or trying to sleep.
Suddenly, you hear a strange and loud sound in the cargo hold beneath your feet. It sounds like banging.
Everyone heard this. Passengers heard it. The flight crew heard it.
A decision was made to divert back to Buenos Aires. What was in the cargo hold? A stowaway? A ground staff member who fell asleep or was trying to escape the government of Javier Milei?
The 777 landed after a fuel burn; it was a brief two-hour flight from EZE to EZE.
A full-scale emergency response was activated. Yes, there were fire engines, but also a cadre of police offiers who boarded the aircraft cargo hold in tactical gear with shields and automatic weapons.

But inside the cargo hold, nothing was found. No stowaway. No terrorist. There did not even appear to be loose cargo.
So what was it?
We don’t know. American Airlines doesn’t know.
The flight ended up being canceled due to crew maximum duty hours. It flew last night…and diverted to Miami (MIA)…maybe it was the ghost of Jorge Rafael Videla?
Someone call Robert Stack.
Oh wait…
