Review: Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport

By Leila

The Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport is a convenient airport hotel that has aged well with a breakfast spread far more generous than virtually Hyatt Place property in the USA.

Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Review

After arriving from Prague, I made a beeline for the airport entrance in hopes of catching the 8:45 pm shuttle.

Shuttle

You can pick up the hotel shuttle bus stop at Schiphol Place (A9–A13) in front of the Sheraton hotel just ouside the main airprot entrance. The shuttle runs from the airport to the hotel every half-hour from 6:45 am to 11:15 pm, and from the hotel to the airport every half-hour from 6:30 am – 11 pm. The shuttle from the airport to the hotel is complimentary. For the shuttle from the hotel to the airport, there is a charge of €8.50 per person except for World of Hyatt elite members. You can call +31 20 542 1234 to check on shuttle status.

There are train and bus options to this hotel, but not very convenient…just use the shuttle or rideshare. If you drive, self-parking is €19.50/day.

Check-In

There was a long, L-O-N-G check in line, but thankfully a separate line for World of Hyatt elites, so I did not have to wait long. Better still would have been to be able to check in on the app and avoid the desk altogether, but that often does not work at Hyatt properties outside the USA and at least this gave me a chance to pick up my return shuttle voucher.

Guest Room

The hallways and guest rooms are unchanged from when I first stayed at this hotel in 2017. My room, 831, was a standard king room and both clean and spacious.

Like most Hyatt Place properties, it included an L-shape couch with coffee table, a desk spanning the length of the room, and a bed.

Coffee service in the room was provided coffee only with a water kettle and an extremely small bottle of water (though he tap water is fine in the Netherlands).

The bathroom was compact and included a toilet, sink, and shower (no tub).

Fitness Center

I typically get up at 3 am on the morning of a westbound transatlantic flight to get my work done (in case Wi-Fi does not function onboard) and to work out. The hotel gym is open 24/7 and while the focus is primarily cardio, I was still able to do a quick full-body workout.

Breakfast

I was again impressed by the hotel’s breakfast spread (complimentary for all guests), which included a generous buffet of American, European, and even Middle Eastern breakfast items (like shakshuka and ful medames).

Restaurant + Bar + Market Café

A 24/7 Market offers food to go and the hotel bar offers beer, wine, and spirits. Both are open 24/7. There’s a self-serve microwave available if you buy food that requires heating.

The restaurant (simply called “restaurant”) where the breakfast is served is also open for lunch (12:00 pm – 2:30 pm) and dinner (6:00 pm – 10:00 pm) as well. Menu here.

CONCLUSION

Another great and convenient stay at this hotel. At 1/3 the cost of an on-site airport hotel, it was also quite economical.

My original review, from March 8, 2017, is below.

I mentioned it earlier and I’ll mention it again — jettison all thoughts of what a Hyatt Place is. Very different than than the U.S. brand, the Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport feels much more like a nice Hyatt Regency than a simple roadside hotel.

Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Shuttle

First thing, I LOVE how Amsterdam Schiphol Airport organizes hotel shuttles. So many airports could learn from this model. You proceed to Arrival Hall 4 and follow the signs to the STA Desk. There you can wait inside a comfortable, warm, waiting room with Wi-Fi. So much better than huddling outside in the cold breathing in second hand smoke.

Presently, a driver pulled up in a Hyatt Place van, came inside, and made an announcement that he was traveling to the Hyatt Place. The shuttles runs every 30 minutes from the hotel to the airport between 6:30 AM – 11:00 PM and from the airport to the hotel between 6:45 AM – 11:15 PM.

On the way back, the shuttle was about 15-minutes late (and I was already cutting it close), but I still made my flights. I’d take a shuttle two hours before your flight…it is only a 10-minute ride, but I ended up arriving later than expected (only about 65 minutes prior to departure).

Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Lobby + Market

As you walk into the hotel, you immediately realize this is not any typical Hyatt Place. The lobby is grand, with ample seating and even nice artwork.

In the U.S., Hyatt Place hotels generally have a menu you can order off with food, coffee, and alcohol. This hotel has a market in the lobby area with a wide selection of hot and cold meals, snacks, and a full bar. If you buy a frozen dinner a microwave is available and there is a huge seating area as well. BTW, the frozen lasagna looks delicious. I regret not ordering it!

Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Room

A very cheerful agent checked me in and thanked me multiple times for being a Globalist member of Gold Passport. She beamed with pride as I remarked how nice this hotel looked and informed me that this was a four star property with a full-service restaurant.

I was assigned a room on the fifth floor with views of Schiphol Airport. The room are actually smaller than a Hyatt Place in the USA, with no kitchenette, but still have the signature L-shaped couch.

Hyatt Place Amsterdam Restaurant + Complimentary Breakfast

In addition to the kitchen, the hotel has a full-service restaurant. You can check out the menu here (.pdf). I’ll save where I had dinner for a future post, but there are some eateries in the neighborhood. The menu looked nice, though — I just did not want to spend 30EUR on dinner.

A smaller room service menu is available in your room.

Breakfast is also served in Gallery Cafe and it blew me away. Breakfast was a European treat — with delicious cold cuts, breads, pastries, cheese, vegetables, and great hot items like eggs, bacon, and sausage. Even the coffee was great (unlike the Andaz).

Breakfast was the biggest surprise at the hotel–be sure to take advantage of it.

Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Fitness Center

A large fitness center on the second floor provided all the equipment necessary for a great workout. I used it at about 5am and there were two other guests using it as well.

CONCLUSION

I should mention the price…only 72EUR thanks to a winter promotion. I see the normal rate is closer to 89EUR on weekends and 119EUR during the week. Still a good deal. I enjoyed this hotel immensely even though I only spent about 12 hours there. While not as convenient as the Sheraton on the airport grounds, I appreciated getting one night closer to my Globalist requirement.
